چکیده

This paper considers methods for estimating the slope coe¢ cients in large panel data models that are robust to the presence of various forms of error cross section dependence. It introduces a general framework where error cross section dependence may arise because of unobserved common e¤ects and/or error spillover e¤ects due to spatial or other forms of local dependencies. Initially, this paper focuses on a panel regression model where the idiosyncratic errors are spatially dependent and possibly serially correlated, and derives the asymptotic distributions of the mean group and pooled estimators under heterogeneous and homogeneous slope coe¢ cients, and for these estimators proposes non-parametric variance matrix estimators. The paper then considers the more general case of a panel data model with a multifactor error structure and spatial error correlations. Under this framework, the Common Correlated E¤ects (CCE) estimator, recently advanced by Pesaran (2006), continues to yield estimates of the slope coe¢ cients that are consistent and asymptotically normal. Small sample properties of the estimators under various patterns of cross section dependence, including spatial forms, are investigated by Monte Carlo experiments. Results show that the CCE approach works well in the presence of weak and/or strong cross sectionally correlated errors. Large Panels with Spatial Correlation and Common Factors

This paper considers estimation of slope coe¢ cients in large panel data models where even after conditioning on common observed e¤ects the cross section units might remain dependently distributed. This could arise when the cross section units are subject to unobserved common e¤ects and/or if there are spill over e¤ects due to spatial or other forms of local dependencies. Initially it focuses o...

Spatial Dependence with Common Factors: A Case Study of Growth in Iran's Provinces

The economic components of a geographic region, such as its economic growth, are influenced by the spillover effect of other regions’ economic components. In addition to these spatial dependences, there are common factors, such as oil price, that induce a correlation among the economic variables of the geographic regions. Thus, it is necessary to distinguish between the dependence created by th...

Investigating Factors Affecting Urban Growth of Large Cities in Iran

The present paper focuses on determining the most important factors affecting urban growth in large cities of Iran through modeling and comparing the common and diverse points of urban growth obtained from other studies. For this purpose, by reviewing the theoretical concepts associated with urban growth, quantities and measurable variables are developed as proper frameworks to study the influe...

Panel Time-Series

Traditionally economic panels had large number of cross-section units and relatively few time periods and econometric methods were developed for such ‘large N small T ’data. These notes explore the econometric methods developed for ...
